The SNCM History
SNCM is a Part of Maritime History
In 1850 The Compagnie de Navigation Mixte is founded and develops
its activities in commerce and passenger transport to the French
colonies.
In 1855 Foundation of the Compagnie Générale
Maritime, which specialised in services to Corsica and the Americas.
In 1861, the company is renamed Compagnie Générale
Transatlantique.
Over the years the names remained and these two
companies were the foundation for SNCM. Even at this time SNCM
was known as the "Compagnie"..
In 1969 these companies merged to form Compagnie
Générale Transméditerranéenne.
In 1976 the official birth of the Société
Nationale Maritime Corse Méditerranée (SNCM) (formerly
Compagnie Générale Transméditerranéenne).
An agreement between SNCM and the State is made to ensure territorial
continuity between Corsica and the Continent for 25 years.
In the 1970s leisure became a consumable like
any other and so shipping capacity had to grow. In the late 1980s,
tourism hit its peak and consumers rightly began to demand higher
quality. SNCM renewed its fleet and has since then developed new
products and services to satisfy its more demanding customers.
The "Compagnie"'s methods evolved. Development of new
technology such as computing or High Speed Vessels also brought
the company new skills. But SNCM's mission has always been the
same: to carry men and women and - the result of their work -
merchandise.
In 2002, together with CMN, it provides the Marseille-Corsica
route with services under the aegis of a public service agreement
between the Collectivité Territoriale and the Office des
Transports de la Corse, with the approval of the Assemblée
Territoriale de Corse.
The SNCM Fleet Information
The SNCM Fleet
SNCM flies the French flag on a fleet of ten ships, made up of
five cruise ferries, four mixed ships and one High Speed Vessel.
SNCM Cruise ferries
High capacity vessels transport passengers and vehicles on day
or night crossings. Some are real cruise ferries with a wide range
of services and installations that turn a simple ferry crossing
into a real mini cruise.
Mixed ships
These carry passengers and freight between Marseille and Corsica
on night crossings, these mixed ships are at the heart of their
shipping service to Corsica. Comfort in the cabins are as high
as in ferries, there are many onboard services and the reduced
passenger capacity means there is a real air of space, relaxation
and friendliness.
SNCM High Speed Vessel
This vessel links Nice to Corsica on day crossings that take less
than three hours. You can travel in aircraft-type seats and will
find bars, fast-food restaurant and shop.
